When you create a line chart, you draw “line geoms.” And when you create a scatter plot, you are draw “point geoms.” The geom is the thing that you draw. In ggplot2, we need to explicitly state the type of geometric object that we want to draw (i.e., bars, lines, points, etc). When create a scatter plot, we draw point geoms (i.e., points).
