I currently have a McIntosh MC252 which I like quite a bit. Besides the weight, there isn’t anything I don’t like about it. These can generally be picked up around $3k. The MC462 was bench tested at Stereophile. This is really the only reason I picked this particular amp. I am sure it outperforms the one I own by a pretty wide margin.

The McIntosh Compendium describes this. Look at MC7200 in the power amplifiers section.The 501s have none of the cheep feel you mentioned and the XLR locks. The weight of the Mono Blocks are nice in comparacin to amps like the 402 and 452. These amps you not walking very far with at about 100lbs. One thing nice about the 402 over the 452 is that you can bridge it and have 800 Watt mono blocks.
