It also likely needs an active connection to the Verizon network to ping the server to request any new notifications of a new voicemail. Problem with Edge is it can only do one thing at a time. If long message and then you hit your check mail interval, they collide and voice mail is delayed while it checks mail. Not sure if it has to start over. Same with phone calls, it cannot get a call and download voice mail at same time. It does sort of suck but it is about Edge.
