I think the champion can alternatively be played as a regular animal champion class. A ranger and a druid can play exactly as a charging horseman like the champion does, except at level 1. Heck, a ranger with lvl 1 animal companion feat - horse then picking up champion multiclass is a better heavy armor knight than your champion is at level 2.
