Dec 26, 2015 · Put the tint in the finish, rather than apply it as a stain. In terms of the color mix, you are right that TransTint's Vintage Amber doesn't look at all like old nitro lacquer to me. It's much too yellow and fake looking. A '60's Fender neck with aged nitro lacquer is really a dull tan-amber shade, not yellow at all. We use 1 cup of water and dye dispensed by the milliliter (using syringes from McMaster Carr). Start with your water, alcohol, etc. and add 1 milliliter of color at a time. Dye some small samples and add another milliliter of dye and repeat. You can create a range of samples with a single batch this way before having to start a whole new batch.
